From the Pennsylvania Department of Health

National Healthcare Quality Week is Oct. 20-26

Titusville –Secretary of Health Michael Wolf today presented Somerset Hospital with the state’s award for “Excellence in Health Care Compliance,” an award recognizing the efforts of delivering consistent quality care to the citizens of the commonwealth.
Somerset Hospital was one of seven selected for the award out of 220 health care facilities in the state. Awardees were honored by the department during National Healthcare Quality Week.

“Governor Corbett’s Healthy Pennsylvania initiative focuses on ensuring affordable, quality health care for all Pennsylvanians and it’s important that we recognize those facilities that are excelling at these goals, especially in a rural setting where the need is dire,” said Wolf. “This award signifies the positive contributions and hard work of those who deliver top-notch care every day to the families and communities they serve.”
The Department of Health licenses and oversees hospitals statewide including acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, critical access hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, children’s hospitals and psychiatric hospitals. In addition, the department conducts about 2,000 inspections annually, including licensure and certification surveys, follow-up surveys and complaint investigations.
Facilities receiving the award were required to have no health citations during the last state licensure survey and no major life safety code deficiencies on the last building inspection. All department-licensed hospitals were eligible for the awards and did not need to apply to be considered.

“Somerset Hospital is honored to be recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and shares the department’s mission to achieve high quality, safe, and effective healthcare through commitment, dedication and professionalism,” said Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Craig Saylor. “This recognition must be shared by the entire organization including our outstanding medical staff and our many dedicated employees.”

During the event, Wolf highlighted Governor Corbett’s Healthy Pennsylvania plan, which aims to increase access to affordable, quality healthcare for all Pennsylvanians.

“Hospitals receiving this award are already supporting the Governor’s plan and doing their part by providing the best care possible to their patients,” added Wolf.
